Universal Access
International Access Symbol
This symbol is used to inform visitors about basic access. It indicates that the primary entrance and restrooms meet the minimum ADAAG criteria. Facilities failing to meet this standard may still be usable by many people. Please check for detailed access information in the individual listing.
Physical Access Features
The symbols below indicate accessible elements within a facility. Symbols are only used when the survey criteria are met. The omission of a symbol does not necessarily mean facilities and programs are not usable by some people with disabilities. The comments beneath the symbols in the individual listings can provide valuable information about access that does not specifically meet the survey criteria.
Designated Accessible Parking
Designated accessible parking closest to the accessible entrance or valet parking.
Primary Entrance / Approach
No steps at the entrance of a facility, the door provides at least a 32 inch clear opening and door hardware can be operated with a closed fist.
Alternate Entrance / Approach
The facility has an entrance which can accommodate people using wheelchairs, however it is not the primary entrance or it does not conform to ADAAG standards. You may require assistance or need to call in advance. A specific description of the entrance is provided in the Access Information section of the directory listing.
Restroom
At lease one toilet for each sex or one unisex toilet is designated as accessible and the entrance to the restrooms provides a clear opening of at least 32 inches. The exterior door hardware can be operated with a closed fist, and a stall with a turning radius of at least 5 by 5 feet is equipped with grab bars. The maximum sink height clearance is 34 inches with clearance underneath of at least 27 inches. The hardware can be operated with a closed fist and all routes of travel in the restroom are clear of obstacles and at least 36 inches wide.
Information
A staffed information desk and/or visual display of the organizations facility, events or services. A staffed information desk and/or visual display of the organization’s facility, events or services.
Public Telephone
No stairs leading to the telephone and the height of the coin slot measures no more than 48 inches for a front approach or 54 inches for a side approach and telephones are accessible for persons using wheelchairs. Note: If there are TTYs or telephones with volume control this is noted in the Access Information section of the directory.
Volume Control Telephone
Indicates a phone that has a hand set with amplified sound and or adjustable volume control.
TTY
TTYs have a typewriter keyboard and allow people who cannot hear or speak well enough to use a normal voice phone to type their telephone conversations. The device operates over normal phone lines.
Meeting / Event Space
There is an accessible pathway (36" wide) clear of obstacles leading to the space, public restrooms are accessible and close to the meeting/event space. Seating is available for people with disabilities (see Access Information for more specific details about seating availability).
Elevators
Elevator doors measure at least 36 inches and the elevator cab measures at least 51 inches by 68 inches. Exterior and interior elevator controls are no higher than 54 inches for a side approach or 48 inches for a front approach with raised lettering or Braille or an elevator operator is available at all times.
Interior Circulation
No unavoidable steps or, if there are changes in level, ramps with slopes no greater than 1:12. Or an elevator and corridors and aisles are clear of obstacles in the path of travel. There are places to sit or railings in long corridors. Good lighting throughout.
Safety
An evacuation plan takes into consideration the needs of people with disabilities. All alarms include flashing lights and audible signals. Staff are trained to assist people with disabilities in an emergency.
Water Fountain
Public drinking fountains are no higher than 36" from the floor and are accessible to people using wheelchairs. Or, a water dispenser with paper cups is available for use by the general public.

Programmatic Features
The symbols for programs and services indicate that an organization makes provisions for services, programs or equipment to benefit people with disabilities. Throughout the Directory, brief comments containing pertinent information about accessibility that are not portrayed with the symbols were added. Access (other than Print or Braille)
for individuals who are blind or have low vision, such as a guided tour, path, or tactile tour or exhibit, tactile and auditory signage.
Audio Description
A narrative for people who are blind or have low vision which seeks to explain the purely visual aspects of a performance or sceene.
Accessible Print
Large print (18 PT or larger) versions of books, programs, and /or pamphlets are available.
Braille
Printed matter is available in Braille, including exhibition labeling, publications and signage.
Sign Language Interpreted
Sign language interpretation is provided by a certified interpreter for lectures, tours, performances, conferences or programs.
Assistive Listening Systems
Transmit amplified sound via hearing aids or head sets; include infrared, loop and FM systems. Portable systems may also be available.
Closed Caption
A television set has a built-in or a separate decoder which transcribes dialogue to text on the screen.
Open Caption
A translation of dialogue and other sounds appears in print on a film or video. (A decoder is not needed to use this form of captioning.)
